Most of us get out of bed in the morning, wash our face, brush our teeth, get dressed, grab a bit of breakfast or a cup of coffee and set about our day. These actions are automatic and require little to no effort on our part. Frankly, we tend to take our ability to perform these tasks for granted. Unfortunately, it usually takes some kind of illness, injury, or debilitating condition to make us really appreciate our health, physical strength, and general well being. So then what are we to do should we find ourselves in one of these difficult situations? The answer is quite simple, pick up the phone and give the professionals at Rankin Physical Therapy a call and they’ll fix you right up.

Physical Therapy (PT), widely known as Physiotherapy, is a primary care specialty in western medicine that, by using mechanical force and movements, manual therapy, exercise therapy, electrotherapy and various physical therapies who practice evidence-based treatments, remediates impairments and promotes mobility, function, and quality of life through examination, prognosis, and physical intervention. This is Wikipedia’s long-winded, all be it, accurate definition of physical therapy. They go on to explain those professionals that we all know as physical therapists perform physical therapy. As one might imagine it is no easy feat to become a physical therapist. In fact, it is a challenge just to be accepted into a degree program in the first place.

Rankin Physical Therapy got its start in 2001 in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. Kelley Rankin who is a graduate of WVU’s Physical Therapy Masters program started the practice. Kelley worked as a therapist in Morgantown, WV for a couple of years after graduating in 1997 and honed his skills until moving to Berkeley Springs. It was here that he would open his first PT clinic in a small 1,000 Square foot rental space. During this period his business grew and he began to see that there was a great need for Physical Therapists in our region. With that, he moved his now thriving practice to a much larger rental space and was able to spread out in it’s 3,500 square feet of usable space and expand his practice to accommodate the communities needs.

Before I continue with the story of Rankin Physical Therapy, I would like to tell you a bit about its founder, Mr. Kelley Rankin. He was born in August of 1969 and grew up in his hometown of Berkeley Springs. Kelley is a graduate of Berkeley Springs High School and also served as an Airman in the United States Air Force. He attended Shepherd University from 1992-1995 where he studied and obtained a degree in Chemistry while working part-time with a local Physical Therapist. All of this before attending and graduating with that Masters Degree in Physical Therapy from WVU in 1997 that I was telling you about earlier. By now I’m sure that you have noticed that one thing Kelley Rankin doesn’t fear is hard work. This guy is a real go-getter, to say the least.

Kelley lived his life as a professional busy professional and a self-professed bachelor with only a loving cat to come home to during this period of his life. He frequently went out for his meals and after a lovely young lady working at Out Back Steak House caught his eye, he began having dinner there almost exclusively until he got up the nerve to ask her out. Needless to say, she agreed to that first date and it went very well. Jennifer McKamie went on to become Mrs. Kelley Rankin. Jennifer was born in 1979 and grew up in her hometown of Flint Michigan. She moved to the Hedgesville area with her family and graduated from Hedgesville High School in 1998. The happy couple tied the knot on May 28, 2005.

It would be 79 days after their marriage that the couple would be dealt a devastating blow. During one of the yearly trips that Kelley enjoyed with his Physical Therapy class members since their graduation from WVU, he would have a freak accident while mountain biking. This resulted in a spinal chord injury that would leave him paralyzed from the waist down. “ I should have opted for golf that day but everything happens for a reason” he mused while telling his story. He went on to say “ I don’t really regret the spinal chord injury. To be honest with you I wouldn’t do it over again but I can’t have any regrets. Life often takes us in a different direction and we don’t always know why.” Wow was I taken with his unexpectedly positive, matter-of-fact response. After all who among us can say that we would take such a life-changing event and turn it into such a positive learning experience? I have no qualms saying with the utmost confidence, not many. Now, this is not to say that he didn’t struggle with this profound change to his life, he certainly did. But with the love and support of his beautiful wife and his strong will, he conquered the resulting challenges beautifully.

Kelley described the birth of his daughter as the true turning point in his journey to become the man that he is today. Those who know him do not see him as the guy in a wheelchair, but rather, the loving husband, father, physical therapist, and capable businessman that he is. “ I realized that I could focus on living my life in a chair or I could look around and see all of the wonderful blessings in my life and focus on them.” He and Jennifer went on to have a son giving them two beautiful children to enjoy. Kelley goes so far as to say that his injury has actually made him a better father because he learned what’s important in life. I will tell you that I have never seen a more loving, close-knit family in my life than the Rankin’s. They are truly a beautiful sight to see.

Kelley seemed genuinely surprised when he told me that he has been treating patients for 12 years now since his spinal chord injury. Impressive? Yes, but that’s not all he’s been doing since then. He and Jennifer have grown their business, Rankin Physical Therapy which now boasts an impressive six locations across our area located in Berkeley Springs, Martinsburg, Hedgesville, Spring Mills, Shepherdstown, and Inwood which is scheduled to open in September 2017. Each one of these locations offers state services with that hometown feel. They also have full fitness centers in their Berkeley Springs, Hedgesville, and Inwood locations. The professional therapy staff of Rankin Physical Therapy is able to treat folks of all ages, from pediatric to geriatric, and everyone in between. They also provide home health services as well. They treat patients in Morgan, Berkeley, Jefferson, Hampshire, and Mineral counties in West Virginia and Frederick, Shenandoah, Warren, and Luray counties in Northern Virginia. I’d say it’s obvious that the professionals of Rankin Physical Therapy love to serve their community near and far and always provide superior services to them regardless of their situation or limitations.

Kelley, Jennifer, and the staff are excited to open the new Inwood location and provide stellar services to Appleman country and be an asset to this warm community who have been so supportive and welcoming to them. Kelley wants to work with Hedgesville High School to educate staff, students, and athletes on safety and prevention so that they can avoid a trip to the clinic. Of course, Rankin Physical Therapy is more than equipped to treat all sorts of injuries, rehabilitation, and the like. What sets them apart from the others is their sense of community and their desire to treat each and every client like family.

When it comes to the business side of the Rankin partnership, Kelley is quoted as saying, “ I put in ten percent and Jennifer takes care of the rest.” In other words, Kelley is the face of the business but Jennifer is its heart and soul. He further credits her with both the growth of their business and their family. I must say to hear these two talk about each other is really something. The couple clearly has a deep seeded mutual love and respect for one another that carries over to not just their children and family, but also to their patients as well as their staff.

I can say without a doubt that if you or a loved one is in need of physical therapy or a full fitness center, Rankin Physical Therapy is the perfect choice. I have it on good authority that they will always go above and beyond to meet your every need and provide superior service to you and your loved ones. Be sure to check out their new Inwood, WV location and keep your eyes peeled for whatever comes next. I have no idea what this might be but I’m certain it will be grand.
