What is Physical Therapy?

Physical Therapy assess joint motion, muscle strength and endurance, cardiac and pulmonary function, sensation and perception, muscle tone, reflexes, and performance of functional activities. Physical Therapy involves the use of exercises to promote and improve the range of motion, mobility, coordination, balance and strength. Many physical exercises can be used in conjunction with therapeutic programs that include the use of heat, cold, electrical stimulation, whirlpool and traction. Our goal at Rankin Physical Therapy is to return you to the highest level of function possible.

Will the Physical Therapist communicate with my referring physician?

Yes. When you return to your physician for a follow-up visit or upon recommendation of your therapist, a progress report will be sent on your behalf. It is important that you let your therapist know when you are returning to see your doctor. If you do not have a follow-up appointment, the therapist will send a report to your doctor when you are finished with your physical therapy treatments.

How often should I exercise?

Beginners should start by working out 3 times a week. After 6 weeks it is safe to increase the intensity of your workout program.

What is cross-training?

Cross training is the practice of combining different methods of training into your workout program. Instead of running everyday, cross training allows you to vary your daily activities. Cross training may help you avoid injuries by lessening the continued stress on certain joints and muscles.

How long will it take me to see results?

You should begin to feel the results of working out almost immediately. Overall increase in strength and loss of weight take an average of 4 to 6 weeks to achieve.

When is the best time to stretch?

It is best to stretch at the end of your workout when your muscles are warm. If you feel that you need to stretch before working out, do some light cardio to warm up before stretching.

How much water should I drink?

Everyone should drink at least 8 8oz glasses of water per day. People who are active should drink more water to replenish the fluids lost during their workout.
